How to Read a CBD Lab Report (COA) Like a Pro: What to Look For & Why It Matter

You read the ingredients in your favorite cookies, right? It’s like that, except going a step beyond just reading the packaging on a product and following up to make sure the claims that are being made on the packaging is actually true!

A COA is a third-party lab test that shows what’s actually inside your CBD product — from cannabinoid content to possible contaminants. Reputable brands use it to back up the claims on their label. Less reputable brands... well, they might skip it altogether.

With Alchemy Naturals, you can scan the QR code on your packaging and instantly pull up the lab report for your exact batch.

Page 1: The “Results at a Glance” Summary

Most labs (including ours) include a summary table right up front. Think of it as the SparkNotes for your gummy’s science class:

  • CBD Content – Does it match what the label claims?

  • THC Content – Is it compliant (below 0.3% for full-spectrum)?

  • Contaminants Panel – Look for a big, friendly “PASS” next to heavy metals, pesticides, solvents, and microbes.

This first page is usually color-coded and super visual. If you see green and lots of “PASS” marks, you’re in good shape.

Potency Breakdown: What’s Really in Your CBD?

Now we’re getting into the cannabinoid profile — aka the part that tells you how much CBD (and friends) is really inside.

Here’s what to look for:

  • Total CBD (mg/g) – This is how much CBD is in one gram of the product.

  • Total THC (mg/g) – Especially important if you want to avoid psychoactive effects or stick to a broad-spectrum formula.

  • Other Cannabinoids – You might see CBG, CBN, CBC, or others. These enhance what’s known as the entourage effect — a natural synergy between cannabinoids.

💡 Pro Tip: Want to calculate how much CBD is in a serving?
You can use this easy formula:

Total CBD (mg/g) × Product weight in grams = CBD per package
Then divide by number of servings to get CBD per serving.

For example:
6.8 mg/g × 17g = 115.6mg of CBD per package
115.6mg ÷ 10 servings = about 11.5mg per gummy

Math magic!

What About the Scary Stuff? (Contaminants Panel)

CBD should be free and clear of contaminants, that’s where the contaminant screening comes in:

  • Heavy Metals – Like lead, arsenic, mercury (hard pass).

  • Pesticides – No thank you, toxic residue.

  • Residual Solvents – Leftover chemicals from extraction? Not in our products.

  • Microbial Content – Bye, mold and bacteria!

If your COA says “PASS” for all of the above, your product meets — or exceeds — safety standards.

Why It All Matters

Lab reports might not be the sexiest part of CBD, but they are the smartest. Reading them helps you:

  • Confirm product quality and safety

  • Understand what you’re putting in your body

  • Avoid shady products with hidden ingredients

  • Feel confident in your wellness routine

Whether you’re new to CBD or a seasoned gummy fan, checking the COA is one of the best things you can do for your peace of mind (and your body).
